On 27th January this year in what can only be described as a slow news day Melbourne's Herald Sun newspaper front page headline read as follows... "EXCLUSIVE: Shopping Centres want MP's banned, POLLIE FREE ZONES." This was accompied by quotes from the venerable and splendidly named Milton Cockburn, executive director of the shopping centre council of Australia. According to Milton, "shopping centre owners have a responsiblility to make sure people can shop comfortably, and safely without interference or harassement." Sorry Milton, last time I went to Chaddy I was not set upon by a raging group of Politicians canvasing me for my vote but by Green peace, Oxfam, Worldvision, Mobile phone salesmen, roof guttering salesmen, people spruiking the value of water saving showerheads and other assorted transient casual tenants. The difference is, of course, that all of the above mentioned casuel tenants pay rent and the Pollies don't. Milton goes on by saying that retailers should not suffer unreasonable disruptions to the flow of customers by their local MP popping in to the food court to vox pop his or her constituents on the issues of the day.. I would very much like to take Mr. Cockburn to the current development Westfield are inflicting on the retailers in Pitt Street at Sydney Central Plaza to show him what REAL disruption to the flow of customers looks like. Incessent jackhammering, whole sections hoarded up, dust and rats are what disrupts customer flow, not a few grinning politicians, looking for a photo opportunity!
